The Race Across South Africa is currently underway; a monumental, self-supported bikepacking challenge that spans nearly 2 000 km across the diverse landscapes of South Africa along the historic Freedom Trail. Launched this year as the newest flagship event on the Freedom Trail calendar, the race pushes riders through rugged dirt roads, rolling plains, remote farmlands, and high mountain passes from KwaZulu-Natal all the way to the Western Cape.

Unlike staged or assisted races, this event is entirely self-supported, demanding that competitors manage their own strategy for rest, navigation, nutrition, and mechanical care. While there are compulsory checkpoints at intervals where basic accommodation and food are provided, athletes largely ride and sleep under their own planning; riding solo for large stretches and making critical decisions that can make or break their race. GPS navigation is permitted, and riders carry satellite trackers with two-way communication for live tracking and safety.

The course is as beautiful as it is brutal, threading through six distinct biomes and a wide range of terrain that highlights South Africa’s scenic diversity; from rolling mountain foothills and dry Karoo expanses to thornveld and remote valleys under vast African skies. Competitors must balance physical stamina with tactical resilience, often riding through remote and sparsely populated areas where support and services are limited.

On the broader competitive front, early race reports indicate a tight and spirited battle at the front, with seasoned endurance rider Namibian specialist Drikus Coetzee taking an early lead and demonstrating how this race already ranks among the toughest gravel and bikepacking challenges in the region.

A compelling story is unfolding just behind; a tightly matched chasing trio of Zane de Decker, Kobus van Niekerk and Pierre Lambert. The three riders have been trading positions repeatedly, each surge and pause reshuffling the order on the live tracker. Their battle highlights the strategic complexity of ultra-distance racing, where decisions around sleep, pacing and terrain management can dramatically alter standings within hours.

As the race progresses westward, this dynamic contest within the race is capturing attention; a powerful reminder that in ultra-endurance cycling, momentum is fluid and every kilometre counts.

With hundreds of kilometres still to ride, the Race Across South Africa remains wide open, raw and deeply compelling; a true test of grit, strategy and human resilience across one of the most beautiful and demanding routes in the country.

Fans and supporters can follow the Race Across South Africa closely with live tracking that shows each rider’s location and progress in real time; a thrilling way to watch the tactical battles and shifting positions unfold across the route.
