There are very few bikes in mountain biking that can genuinely claim to have changed the sport. The SCOTT Spark is one of them.

Since its launch two decades ago, the Spark has become one of the most successful cross-country race bikes ever created, collecting World Championship titles, Olympic medals, World Cup victories and Cape Epic wins along the way. More importantly, it has consistently redefined what an XC race bike should be.

When SCOTT launched the fourth-generation Spark in 2021, the cycling world stopped and stared. The Swiss brand moved the rear shock inside the frame, challenging accepted design conventions and proving that innovation still had a place in a category increasingly driven by marginal gains. The results spoke for themselves.

Nino Schurter used that bike to add more World Championship titles and World Cup victories to a career already regarded as the greatest in the sport’s history. Together with Filippo Colombo, he also powered the Spark to victory at the 2025 Absa Cape Epic.

Now SCOTT has done it again.

Introducing the all-new Spark RC. Not a refinement. Not an update. An entirely new race machine built for the realities of modern cross-country and marathon racing.

Cross-country racing and marathon racing have changed dramatically over the past decade.

In XCO, courses are faster. Descents are rougher. Technical features are bigger. Riders are expected to climb like road cyclists, descend like enduro racers and sprint like track racers. In marathons and stage races, singletrack and trail features are far more prevalent than they used to be.

The new Spark RC has been designed specifically for this reality.

Every aspect of the bike has been developed around three guiding principles: Light Weight, Ride Dynamics and Seamless Performance.

It sounds simple, but achieving all three simultaneously is anything but.

LIGHT WEIGHT THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

There are plenty of lightweight bikes on the market. The problem is that lightweight doesn’t automatically mean fast.

SCOTT’s engineers approached the new Spark RC differently. Rather than chasing a headline weight figure at all costs, they focused on creating a frame where every gram serves a purpose. The result is astonishing.

The flagship HMX-SL frame weighs just 1 427 grams in a painted size Medium, including all covers and pivot hardware. But the real story isn’t the number on the scale. It’s how that weight has been removed.

The shock now sits lower inside the frame than before, allowing SCOTT to centralise mass and optimise the carbon structure around it. The result is a bike that accelerates with urgency, changes direction effortlessly and feels remarkably composed when the trail gets rough.

Lower weight. Better balance. More speed.

WHY GRIP IS THE NEW SPEED

Modern XC racing isn’t won solely on the climbs anymore. Increasingly, races are decided by who can carry the most speed through technical terrain. That’s where the Spark RC’s ride dynamics come into play.

SCOTT has engineered the frame as a complete performance system, carefully balancing stiffness and compliance throughout the chassis.

Too stiff and the bike skips across rough terrain. Too flexible and power disappears. The challenge is finding the sweet spot where traction, efficiency and control work together.

SCOTT calls it ride dynamics. Riders will simply call it confidence.

By controlling how the frame flexes under load, the Spark RC keeps tyres in contact with the ground for longer, reducing the chatter that often robs riders of traction in corners and rough sections. The result is more grip, more control and ultimately more speed.

Because on a modern XC race track, grip equals speed.

INTERNAL SHOCK – BETTER THAN EVER

The internal shock remains one of the Spark’s defining features. For 2027, however, SCOTT has completely reworked the concept.

The shock sits lower within the frame and is now easier to access than ever before. Magnetic and clip-mounted frame covers provide quick access for setup and servicing, while maintaining full protection from dirt, dust and water.

It’s a practical solution that combines the aerodynamic, structural and handling benefits of an internal shock with the accessibility riders and mechanics demand.

Importantly, riders aren’t locked into a proprietary suspension solution either. The new Spark RC maintains compatibility with standard XC shocks, allowing racers and privateers the freedom to customise suspension choices to suit their preferences.

READY FOR MODERN RACING

Cross-country bikes continue to evolve, and the Spark RC embraces that progression.

The frame accommodates long-travel dropper posts of up to 200mm on larger sizes, allowing riders to get lower and move more freely on technical descents.

SCOTT has also redesigned the bottle cage interface, moving the mounting hardware outside the frame to allow unrestricted dropper insertion.

It’s one of those details that seems insignificant until you’re dropping into a steep rock garden at race pace. Then it makes perfect sense.

The frame also offers space for two water bottles, even on smaller frame sizes, still a valuable feature for marathon racers and stage-race competitors, especially in the hot South African conditions.

SMARTER INTEGRATION EVERYWHERE

The new Spark RC isn’t just about racing performance. It’s about making life easier too.

The patented Syncros OCT cable-routing system simplifies setup and maintenance through colour-coded cable channels routed through the headset.

Selected models feature integrated Save-the-Day storage, allowing riders to carry essentials such as a tube, tyre levers and a pump inside the bike.

An integrated multi-tool hidden within the frame provides everything needed for common trailside adjustments.

These are small details, but they contribute to a bike that feels thoroughly thought through from the first ride to race day.

PROVEN BEFORE IT LAUNCHED

Perhaps the strongest endorsement of the new Spark RC came before its official unveiling.

The SCOTT-SRAM team debuted the bike at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Nové Město in May. The results were immediate.

Filippo Colombo claimed third place in the Elite Men’s race, Fabio Püntener finished fifth, while Bjorn Riley was firmly in contention before a late-race puncture ended his challenge. At the Leogang World Cup in mid-June, just after the launch, Colombo claimed second in the XCC and Riley fourth in the XCO (promoted to third).

In a discipline where results matter more than marketing claims, the new Spark RC has already shown that it belongs at the front of the world’s fastest races.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

The outgoing Spark became one of the most successful mountain bikes in history. The new Spark RC has the difficult task of following that legacy. Fortunately, it appears more than ready.

Lighter. Faster. More composed. Easier to live with. More capable than ever. The all-new SCOTT Spark RC isn’t trying to reinvent cross-country racing. It’s simply trying to win it. And based on what we’ve already seen, it most likely will.
