When Specialized launched the Levo R in February 2026, it caught us slightly off guard. After all, the Levo 4 had arrived less than a year earlier and quickly established itself as one of the most capable full-power eBikes available. Why introduce another model so soon?

After spending several weeks on the Levo R, riding everything from Gauteng’s flowing singletrack to the demanding three-day KAP sani2c stage race, the answer became clear. The Levo R isn’t a replacement for the Levo 4. It’s a different interpretation of what a full-power eBike can be, and for many South African riders, it’s the more relevant option.

THE BIKE

The Levo 4 was built to conquer mountains. With generous suspension travel, a mullet wheel setup and geometry aimed squarely at aggressive trail and enduro riding, it thrives on steep descents and highly technical terrain. It’s the sort of bike that feels most at home when pointed down a mountainside trail in George or Stellenbosch or Pietermaritzburg…

But South Africa’s biggest mountain biking market isn’t based in the mountains.

In Gauteng, where a significant portion of the country’s mountain bikers live and ride, the terrain is defined by rolling hills, flowing singletrack, jeep tracks and moderate climbs. While there are certainly technical trails, most riders spend far more time pedalling than descending. That’s exactly where the Levo R fits in.

At its core is the same Specialized 3.1 motor found in the Levo 4. Producing a formidable 810 watts of peak power and 105Nm of torque (for S-Works models, it’s 850W and 111NMm),  it sits among the most powerful and refined drive units currently available. The motor is paired with the same integrated 840Wh battery, giving the Levo R identical power output and range potential to its more aggressive sibling.

Specialized didn’t reduce the performance. Instead, it refined the package.

The Levo R rolls on 29-inch wheels front and rear rather than the mullet configuration used on the Levo 4. It uses less suspension travel, faster-rolling tyres (Specialized Renegades) and a build philosophy focused more on efficiency and versatility than outright downhill capability.

A FACT 11m carbon frame keeps weight impressively low for a full-power eBike, helping the Levo R come in roughly 2kg lighter than the Levo 4. While that may not sound significant on paper, it is noticeable on the trail. The bike feels more responsive when changing direction, easier to manoeuvre through tighter sections, a little easier to float over jumps and gaps; and generally more lively beneath the rider.

While the Levo R feels lighter and more responsive than the Levo 4 on the trail, riders expecting a lightweight eBike may be surprised by the scale reading. This remains a full-power eMTB with a large battery, not a lightweight category bike.

Suspension duties are handled by 140mm of travel up front and 130mm at the rear, with Specialized’s GENIE shock technology providing a more progressive ride feel. The system remains supple through the initial part of the stroke to maximise traction and comfort while offering increased support deeper into the travel to resist harsh bottom-outs.

The Levo R also introduces one of the more useful features we’ve seen on a modern eBike: Micro Tune. Instead of being limited to fixed support modes, riders can adjust motor output in 10% increments, allowing far greater control over power delivery and battery consumption. It sounds like a small feature, but in practice it allows riders to fine-tune assistance levels for specific climbs, trail conditions or endurance goals.

The result is a bike that retains all the power and range of the Levo 4 while delivering it in a lighter, more efficient and arguably more practical package for the terrain many riders actually encounter every weekend.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ON GAUTENG TRAILS

Most of our testing took place where many South African riders spend their time: Gauteng.

Northern Farm and Cradle Moon (both Johannesburg) and Die Bosveld and Hennops (both Pretoria) provided the perfect starting point. Flowing, twisty singletrack, mild climbs and variable terrain highlighted the Levo R’s strengths almost immediately. The bike felt quick, efficient and remarkably easy to ride fast. Our testers have left a few Strava KOMs at Northern Farm to confirm this.

Unlike some long-travel eBikes that can feel overly planted or cumbersome on flatter terrain, the Levo R encourages momentum. It carries speed exceptionally well and rewards active riding.

From there, we moved onto more technical terrain at Thaba Trails and the St Stithians trail network. While these venues don’t feature mountain-scale descents, they do include rocky sections, drops and technical challenges that quickly expose any shortcomings in a bike’s handling. The Levo R never felt out of place.

In fact, one of the biggest surprises during the test period was how capable the bike remained when the terrain became rough. While it is clearly designed with efficiency in mind, Specialized has not sacrificed control or confidence.

A MASTERCLASS IN CLIMBING

Specialized says the Levo R was tuned for climbing, and our testing suggests that claim is fully justified.

To properly assess its capabilities, we deliberately sought out technical climbs, including trails more commonly used for descending.

Modern full-power eBikes all possess enormous climbing ability. Raw power is rarely the limiting factor. The real challenge lies in managing that power effectively on loose, rocky and awkward terrain.

Technical climbing requires smooth torque delivery, precise handling and a chassis that remains balanced at low speeds. Too much power too suddenly can easily break traction and stall momentum. This is where the Specialized 3.1 motor truly impressed.

While its headline figures of 810W and 105Nm grab attention, the real story is the quality of its power delivery. Torque arrives progressively and predictably, making it easier to maintain traction and control on challenging climbs.

Combined with the bike’s balanced geometry and lower overall weight, the Levo R consistently cleaned technical ascents that would challenge many riders on conventional mountain bikes.

You don’t necessarily need huge suspension travel to climb effectively. You need a bike that remains composed, balanced and predictable. The Levo R delivers exactly that.

THE BIGGER TEST: KAP SANI2C

Almost any modern bike can feel good on a two-hour trail ride. A three-day stage race is a far more revealing test.

To see how the Levo R would perform under real-world conditions, TREAD Media editor Sean Badenhorst rode the 2026 KAP sani2c aboard the bike.

Covering approximately 85km per day through KwaZulu-Natal’s spectacular terrain, sani2c combines long climbs, fast descents, flowing singletrack and hours in the saddle. It’s one of the best tests of efficiency, comfort and battery management available. The Levo R excelled.

One of the event’s defining features is the notorious Iconic climb on Stage 2. Stretching for roughly 5km and gaining 308m of elevation, it includes loose rocks, ruts and enough surface variation to demand concentration.

For a bike with this level of assistance, the climb itself wasn’t the challenge. Using a combination of ECO and AUTO modes, the bigger challenge was navigating safely around riders on acoustic bikes who were walking or struggling their way up the ascent.

At the front of the race, however, traffic was far less of an issue.

Team Complete Cyclist riders Scott McKenzie and Stephan le Roux, both racing aboard new Levo Rs (fitted with RockShox Flight Attendant!), demonstrated just how effective the platform can be. Stephan established a new eBike KOM on the Iconic Strava segment with a blistering time of 12min 32sec, while McKenzie, a slightly heavier rider, crossed just 30 seconds later.

Those times provide a clear indication of the bike’s climbing potential when ridden flat out.

The Levo R arrives with assistance capped at 32km/h, which is standard in South Africa.

We left the bike in its standard configuration throughout testing. However, riders can activate Commuter Mode, which increases the assistance limit to 45km/h.

McKenzie and Le Roux used this setting during sani2c. Despite competing against riders using unrestricted bikes with no assistance limits, the Complete Cyclist pairing secured victory in the eBike category with an overall time of 8 hours, 12 minutes and 34 seconds.

Remarkably, that was almost an hour faster than the winning time recorded in the UCI professional category.

BATTERY RANGE – BETTER THAN EXPECTED

Battery range remains one of the biggest considerations for prospective eBike buyers.

The Levo R’s 840Wh battery is integrated neatly into the downtube and can be removed when necessary for charging or transport. For riders wanting even greater range, Specialized offers a 280Wh range extender (at an additional cost of R14000) that fits into the bottle cage.

Combined, the two provide a massive 1120Wh of available energy, making the Levo R one of the most capable long-distance eBikes currently available.

Because he wasn’t racing for a result at sani2c, our editor elected to use the range extender throughout the event. The additional capacity provided complete peace of mind.

 

His battery usage looked like this:

For context, he weighs 72kg and is considered to be above average in terms of riding skill. Importantly, he wasn’t trying to set records. He rode sani2c to enjoy the experience rather than maximise speed, which certainly helped battery consumption.

Even so, those numbers demonstrate the impressive range potential available to riders who manage power sensibly.

WHAT ABOUT TECHNICAL RIDING?

Although sani2c includes huge amounts of singletrack, it isn’t an especially technical event.

To push the Levo R further, one of our testers entered a National Enduro Series round at Thaba Trails in the eBike category. The six stages featured enough rocks, drops and technical features to provide a meaningful challenge. The outcome was hardly surprising.

Despite running a bit less travel than many dedicated enduro bikes and other eBikes, the Levo R never felt under-gunned. It remained stable at speed, maintained excellent composure through rough sections and absorbed larger impacts without drama.

Our tester went on to win the eBike category and finish 15th overall.

That’s not to suggest the Levo R is an enduro race bike. Rather, it highlights just how broad its capability envelope really is.

SUMMARY

The easiest mistake to make is viewing the Levo R as a lesser version of the Levo 4. It isn’t. The Levo R is a more focused and arguably more relevant interpretation of what a full-power eBike should be for many South African riders.

It delivers exactly the same motor performance, battery capacity and climbing ability as the Levo 4, but packages those attributes in a lighter, more efficient and more versatile platform.

For riders who spend most of their time on marathon routes, stage races, trail parks and flowing singletrack, the Levo R simply makes a lot of sense. Yet when the trails become technical or the riding turns aggressive, it possesses enough capability to rise to the occasion.

Specialized set out to build a full-power eBike optimised for real-world riding rather than extreme terrain alone. Based on our experience over several weeks and hundreds of kilometres, it succeeded. For a large percentage of South African mountain bikers, the Levo R is the smartest eBike Specialized has ever produced.
