There are mountain bike stage races that test your legs, and there are those rare events that leave a lasting impression long after you’ve packed your bike away. The Owl Route falls firmly into the latter category.

Entries are now open for the seventh edition of this unique three-day mountain bike experience, which takes place from 23 to 25 April 2027 in the heart of the Great Karoo. Organised by Urban Goat, a team renowned for creating memorable, social riding experiences, The Owl Route once again promises an all-inclusive weekend where exceptional riding is only part of the attraction.

To preserve its intimate atmosphere, the event is limited to just 90 participants, making it one of South Africa’s most exclusive stage race experiences.

Based in the charming Karoo village of Nieu-Bethesda, riders can choose between staying in luxury glamping tents or carefully selected guest houses, ensuring comfort is part of every day’s adventure.

The riding itself is perfectly suited to riders looking to explore rather than simply race. Across three days, the routes wind predominantly along quiet gravel roads and jeep track, with a welcome taste of singletrack on the opening day. The terrain is rewarding rather than intimidating, allowing participants to appreciate one of South Africa’s most distinctive landscapes.

What truly sets The Owl Route apart, however, are the experiences woven into each day.

The opening stage is unlike anything found at a conventional mountain bike stage race. Riders roll through the historic streets of Nieu-Bethesda, stopping to experience some of the village’s iconic landmarks and personalities. Enjoy refreshments at the Tot-hier-toe Padstal, savour Aunt Evelyn’s famous homemade ginger beer, and pause for cold drinks and freshly made pancakes at Boeties Pub and the Village Inn Café. It’s a stage designed as much around discovery as it is around riding.

Day two raises the physical challenge while rewarding riders with spectacular scenery. With the majestic Compassberg dominating the horizon for much of the route, it’s a day that perfectly captures the vast beauty and solitude of the Great Karoo.

Back at race village, the atmosphere continues. Each morning begins with coffee delivered directly to your luxury glamping tent, while Saturday evening brings one of the event’s most anticipated traditions – an owl-themed dress-up dinner where participants swap cycling kit for creative costumes and celebrate another memorable day on the bike.

Throughout the weekend, riders also encounter one of Nieu-Bethesda’s most fascinating engineering features: the village’s century-old water furrow system, which continues to carry flowing water through this remarkably dry part of the Karoo.

The adventure doesn’t stop when the riding does. Saturday afternoon provides the perfect opportunity to explore Nieu-Bethesda at a relaxed pace. Visit the world-famous Owl House created by Helen Martins, discover the fascinating Kitchen Fossil Museum, browse local art galleries or enjoy a leisurely donkey cart ride through one of South Africa’s most character-filled villages.

BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY

Urban Goat has also introduced an exciting new option for 2027. Family members or friends who would rather explore on foot can enter the inaugural Run the Owl Route, taking place from 30 April to 2 May 2027.

Like the mountain bike event, the three-day running experience is all-inclusive, limited to just 90 participants and incorporates many of the same hospitality highlights that have made The Owl Route so popular.

It also creates the opportunity for couples or groups with different sporting interests to extend their Karoo stay. One partner can tackle the mountain bike event while the other returns the following weekend for the running experience, with supporters warmly welcomed at both events.

Whether you’re looking for an unforgettable mountain biking escape, a memorable holiday with friends or a reason to finally experience the magic of Nieu-Bethesda, The Owl Route delivers an experience that goes far beyond the finish line.

With only 90 places available, early entry is highly recommended. To find out more, or to secure one of the limited entries, click here.
