Buffelsdrift Trails Park, just north of Pretoria, is one of the most popular trails parks in South Africa. But unprecedented rain in summer and autumn required significant financial investment for maintenance and repairs. The Buffelsdrift Big Five is a fund-raising event for the park, but it’s a proper challenge that should appeal to those keen on a serious endurance test.

Buffelsdrift has over 100km of trails which include four dedicated enduro lines and nine-marked routes ranging from the easy 7km route to the demanding 84km Buffuni Route. There are also five dedicated hiking/running trails. That kind of variety is what makes the park so popular. In order to ensure the park remains viable, though, more income is needed and now is the best time to ride the trails, which are in pristine condition!

The Buffelsdrift Big Five is an event designed to raise funds and create a stimulating challenge. And it’s a serious challenge! You have 30 hours to complete five laps of the 50km Nguni Route. That’s a total of 250km of mountain biking with 2479m of ascent, which you can either tackle as a solo rider or as a team of two. It’s not a relay, you ride together.

The time frame starts at 06h00 on Saturday 6 August and closes at midday on Sunday 7 August. The entry fee is R499 for Solo and R899 for a Team of two. There are prizes for the following categories:

Teams: Men; Women Mixed and Silver Foxes (combined age of 100 years)

Solo: Men and Women
