There has been plenty of hype around the new SCOTT Spark RC, and with good reason. This is SCOTT’s fifth-generation XC race bike, designed first and foremost to help professional racers win World Cup XCO races. But that isn’t necessarily how most Spark RCs sold in South Africa will be used. For most, a bike like this will spend its time tackling marathon races, stage races and long days of singletrack.

We recently spent some time on the Spark RC World Cup to find out whether SCOTT’s latest interpretation of its unconventional XC race bike is as impressive on the trails as it is on paper.

THE BIKE

When SCOTT introduced the fourth-generation Spark RC in 2021, it did something that very few manufacturers were prepared to do with a World Cup-level XC race bike: it moved the rear shock completely inside the frame.

At a time when most cross-country bikes still followed a relatively conventional external-shock layout, the Spark looked radically different. More importantly, SCOTT argued that integrating the shock into the frame wasn’t simply about aesthetics. It allowed its engineers to rethink the frame structure around the shock, use larger pivot bearings, protect the shock from the elements and lower its position within the chassis.

That design proved itself at the highest level of racing. The previous Spark became one of the defining XC race bikes of its generation, including World Championship titles, World Cup wins and Absa Cape Epic victories with Nino Schurter and the SCOTT-SRAM team.

SCOTT could therefore have played it safe with the fifth-generation bike, retaining the successful architecture and making incremental improvements. Instead, it has effectively reinvented the concept.

The most obvious change is hidden from view. Rather than sitting vertically inside the seat-tube area as it did on the previous Spark, the rear shock now sits horizontally and much lower in the chassis, around the bottom-bracket area.

That has allowed SCOTT to rethink the suspension architecture around it, reconfigure the rear triangle and influence where the bike’s mass is concentrated. The bottom-bracket area is slimmer, the front and rear triangles flow more seamlessly into each other, and the entire chassis has a noticeably cleaner appearance.

It is an important distinction because, at first glance, the new Spark can look deceptively similar to its predecessor. Underneath the carbon, however, this is a substantially re-engineered bike rather than a simple update. It is also what makes the Spark RC World Cup something of an outlier in today’s XCO category.

Many contemporary World Cup race bikes have converged on a remarkably similar formula: lightweight carbon frames, 100-120mm of travel, flex-stay rear suspension, 29-inch wheels, steep-ish seat angles and increasingly long and slack front ends.

The Spark takes a slightly different route. Its integrated suspension remains one of the most distinctive features in the category, while the revised chassis gives SCOTT another way of influencing handling and suspension performance.

The World Cup model is built around a lightweight HMF carbon frame and retains 120mm of rear-wheel travel. Up front is a RockShox SID Ultimate Flight Attendant fork with 120mm of travel, matched to a RockShox SIDLuxe Ultimate Flight Attendant rear shock.

The electronic Flight Attendant system automatically manages the suspension’s three positions – Lock, Pedal and Descend – according to rider input and terrain, removing the need for constant manual suspension-mode changes during a race or ride.

The frame has an adjustable headset, allowing the head angle to be altered by approximately half a degree, while the rear suspension continues to use SCOTT’s lightweight Flex Pivot concept. SCOTT has also increased the size and sealing of the suspension bearings, while maintaining the fully integrated cable routing that has become another characteristic of the Spark platform.

The World Cup specification is suitably high-end. SRAM’s X0 Eagle Transmission provides wireless 12-speed shifting, with a 10-52T cassette and 34T chainring. The X0 crankset incorporates a Quarq spindle-based power meter, making power measurement part of the bike rather than an aftermarket addition.

SRAM also supplies the Motive four-piston brakes, with a 180mm rotor at the front and 160mm at the rear. Wheels are Syncros Silverton carbon units with a 30mm internal rim width, while the bike rolls on 29 x 2.4-inch Maxxis race tyres. A Syncros carbon integrated cockpit, Syncros dropper post and Syncros saddle complete the build.

There is a practical advantage to SCOTT’s approach, too. The shock is substantially shielded from mud, water and debris, something that makes particular sense on a South African race bike that could encounter everything from dry, dusty Highveld conditions to wet and muddy stage-race courses in KwaZulu-Natal or the Western Cape. At the same time, SCOTT has retained access points for servicing and setup rather than making the suspension a sealed, inaccessible component.

On paper, then, the Spark RC World Cup is a serious race machine: lightweight, 120mm at both ends and equipped with the sort of component specification expected of a World Cup bike.

THE RIDE

The first thing we noticed is just how clean this bike is. Yes, the lack of cables around the cockpit contributes to this, but the actual frame itself looks incredibly sleek. The main reason, of course, is the internal rear shock, which really tidies the bike up.

The change to the chassis has also allowed SCOTT’s engineers to make the bottom-bracket area slimmer than that of its predecessor. The front and rear triangles have a more seamless connection, giving the bike an overall svelte appearance.

Our test model, the RC World Cup, comes with RockShox Flight Attendant, the highly rated automatic suspension adjustment system. Our test team had ridden Flight Attendant once before, so we were keen to gain more familiarity with the system. We got it properly set up before the first ride to ensure technology compatibility from the outset.

Although we have test-ridden a few SCOTT Sparks since 2021’s extreme frame redesign, it still takes a bit of getting used to not actually seeing the rear shock at all times. On this particular model, and the others equipped with RockShox Flight Attendant, you can see a bit of the shock sticking through the frame cover. It’s a bit like a submarine, where only the periscope is visible while the big business happens below.

As with most top-end XC/Marathon bikes these days, the World Cup has a single-piece bar/stem. SCOTT specced it to offer most riders of that size frame a comfortable and controlled position.

We were able to do 10 rides on the Spark World Cup, primarily in the Gauteng region on dry winter trails. The thing with RockShox Flight Attendant is that it’s smart technology and requires at least eight rides to gauge the rider’s riding style and nuances and customise itself accordingly. We didn’t have the luxury of time, so we used the manual override option when the system seemed a bit out of sync with the rider.

SMOOTH, BUT SERIOUSLY QUICK

The initial impression from the first ride is just how smooth the Spark World Cup is. You actually wonder if all your power is going into moving you forward because it just seems too damn smooth. And it turns out that, despite how smooth it feels, it is indeed efficient.

Our testers were notably quicker over certain Strava segments with a high volume of tight singletrack turns on the Spark World Cup than on the Giant Anthem Advanced, which indicated rapid acceleration.

That characteristic is particularly noticeable when the trail becomes a succession of short corners and accelerations rather than one long, uninterrupted effort. The Spark seems to carry speed exceptionally well and responds quickly when you get back on the pedals.

The test bike came with no spacers on the stem, so it sat in a low position on top of the head tube. This resulted in the rider’s weight being firmly over the front wheel. Not all riders like this forward-weighted position, but our testers loved it, especially on twisty, flat or gently sloping singletrack where having more rider weight over the front wheel helped the bike feel planted and precise.

From a climbing perspective, the Spark World Cup was relatively comfortable on long climbs, but also rather snappy on short, steep ascents. The RockShox Flight Attendant firmed up the suspension as expected on smooth-surfaced, long climbs. On rough-surfaced climbs, the suspension opened up as expected, but was a bit slow for our liking at times.

We assume this is because the system hadn’t been able to complete its rider personalisation yet. When it was working as intended, however, the system delivered superb climbing efficiency, with strong traction and minimal pedal bob. This is likely helped by the high anti-squat characteristics of the revised higher main pivot/linkage arrangement.

COMPOSED, BUT WITH A CAVEAT

Gradual and medium descents were superb, but steep, rough descents were a little rowdy on occasion. After analysing this, our testers, who are all competent descenders, put it down to the lowish stack height of 590mm and the relatively short 88mm head tube, both of which are substantially more compact than the Giant Anthem Advanced, Specialized Epic 8 and TREK Top Fuel.

Remember, we had no spacers on an already short headtube and couldn’t adjust it to see whether raising the bar would offer more control on steep, rough descents.

That is an important point because cockpit setup can have a significant effect on how an XC race bike behaves when the gradient changes dramatically. The Spark’s low front end contributed to its excellent front-wheel weighting and cornering confidence on flatter or gently sloping terrain, but we would have liked the opportunity to raise the cockpit and assess whether that would have improved its behaviour on more technical, steep descents.

SCOTT’s commitment to a complete multi-pivot rear suspension system, rather than the flex-stay design used by many other brands, was highly evident in the previous editions of the Spark and continues into this generation. Our testers didn’t notice any change in the efficiency of the suspension over its predecessor, and that was definitely one of the best-performing rear-suspension systems we have ridden. The rear end on the new Spark behaved with absolute composure when tackling rough surfaces at both moderate and high speed.

One thing we did notice was a lower likelihood of pedal strikes on the new RC. While it’s great to have a low centre of gravity, the previous generation was more prone to pedal strikes and required better rider awareness to prevent them. SCOTT has specced shorter cranks on the new generation Small, Large and Extra Large models, but the Medium, which is what we tested has the same 170mm crank length as its predecessor.

The bottom-bracket height of the new generation is 333.6-333.4mm, depending on the headset setting, while the previous generation is 330mm off the ground. It’s a small change on paper, but one that was noticeable on the trail.

PRACTICALITY BENEATH THE CARBON

SCOTT’s frame design isn’t only about appearance or suspension performance. There are some genuinely useful practical benefits. One of the reasons for the internal-shock architecture was to accommodate two bottles inside the main frame. On the new Spark, the engineers also ensured that the seat tube is straight right down to the top of the bottom-bracket junction, allowing the bike to accommodate longer dropper seatposts.

They added an external mount so that the bottle-cage bolts on the seat tube don’t screw directly into the seat tube itself, creating more space for a longer dropper post. Our size Medium came with a 100mm-travel dropper post, which was more than adequate for our testers. The frame can, however, accommodate aftermarket options in excess of 150mm of travel.

We were able to use one large bottle on the downtube, but had to use a medium-sized bottle against the seat tube. Large and Extra Large frames will likely be able to carry two large bottles. For marathon and stage-race riders, that’s a significant consideration. The Spark’s race-bike credentials don’t mean it has sacrificed the carrying capacity that becomes important when a bike is being used for several hours at a time.

SAVE THE DAY

We sustained a front-tyre cut on our second ride. We had to insert a tube and a gator in order to keep rolling. The new Spark RC comes standard with an in-frame kit, called Save the Day, which includes a mini pump, tyre levers, a lightweight TPU tube and a valve-core remover.

We used our own spares, including an energy-bar wrapper as the gator, but would have been able to complete our ride with the Spark’s Save the Day kit. We just didn’t want to disrupt this kit on a demo bike.

There’s also a multi-tool in the frame that is able to tighten or loosen all the common bolts on the bike, including the axles. It’s exactly the sort of feature that makes sense on a race bike that is likely to be used far beyond a World Cup paddock. A mechanical problem several kilometres into a marathon or stage race is very different from one occurring in a fully supported professional race environment, and carrying the basics inside the bike is a worthwhile advantage.

POWER METER INCLUDED

As mentioned earlier, the World Cup also comes with a built-in Quarq power meter. Our testers don’t always use power meters, but it was most useful to sync our devices with it and have all the power readings recorded on each ride.

There are four batteries on this bike: one for the rear derailleur, one for the rear shock, one for the suspension fork – all interchangeable SRAM AXS batteries – and a CR2032 coin-cell battery for the Quarq power meter. It’s another example of how the World Cup specification is aimed squarely at riders who want a race-ready package straight out of the box.

THE VERDICT

The new SCOTT Spark RC World Cup is a fascinating bike because SCOTT could easily have taken the conservative route. Instead, it has taken a successful concept and pushed it somewhere new. On the trail, though, it’s the riding experience rather than the engineering that matters most. And our overriding impression was of a bike that is exceptionally smooth, efficient and quick.

The Spark’s ability to accelerate through tight singletrack was particularly impressive. Our testers also loved the forward-weighted cockpit on flatter and gently undulating trails, where the bike felt precise and planted through successive corners.

The rear suspension remains one of the bike’s biggest strengths. It provides excellent traction and pedal efficiency when climbing, while remaining remarkably composed once the trail gets rough.

There are caveats. The low cockpit worked brilliantly for our testers on flatter, twistier terrain, but the combination of a 590mm stack height, short head tube and no available spacer adjustment on our test bike contributed to some rowdy moments on steep, rough descents. On rides longer than three hours, hand pressure started to become noticeable, which could likely be solved with a slightly higher handlebar position.

We also weren’t able to complete the Flight Attendant personalisation process, so the system occasionally felt slower to respond than we would have liked. This was purely a time constraint issue in our opinion and not a reflection on SCOTT or RockShox.

The Spark RC World Cup is undoubtedly a serious XCO race bike, but it doesn’t feel like a bike that has been compromised by its racing pedigree. For riders who spend their weekends racing marathons, stage races or fast singletrack, its combination of speed, efficiency, suspension performance and practical features makes a lot of sense.

In a category where many XCO race bikes are beginning to look remarkably similar, the Spark RC also has something increasingly rare: personality. If your idea of an ideal South African race bike is something that can climb efficiently, accelerate hard through tight singletrack and still give you enough suspension performance to attack rough trails, the Spark RC World Cup deserves to be high on your shortlist.

SUMMARY

For South African mountain bikers, the SCOTT Spark RC World Cup makes a strong case as a marathon and stage-race weapon rather than simply an XCO specialist. Our testers found it smooth, efficient and snappy, particularly through tight, twisty singletrack, while its rear suspension delivered excellent traction and composure. The low cockpit isn’t ideal for everyone on steep, rough descents, but it worked brilliantly for our testers on most terrain. Add two bottle mounts, integrated tools, a repair kit and long-dropper compatibility, and the Spark becomes a remarkably practical race bike.
