The Momentum Medical Scheme Cape Pioneer, presented by Biogen, offers something many South African mountain bikers have been looking for: a genuine stage race challenge that bridges the gap between the country’s popular three-day events and the demands of the Absa Cape Epic.

Every mountain biker reaches a point where the familiar starts to feel comfortable. The three-day stage races have been conquered, the routines are established and the question becomes: what’s next?
For many riders, the answer has always been the Cape Epic. But jumping straight from a three-day race to eight days of relentless racing is a significant leap. That’s where the 2026 Cape Pioneer comes into its own.

Taking place from 22-26 September, the five-stage event has evolved into the ideal progression race. It delivers all the ingredients that make South African stage racing so addictive – long days in the saddle, spectacular scenery, varied terrain and the camaraderie that only develops after several days of racing together – without quite reaching Epic-level demands.
For anyone already holding an entry for the 2027 Absa Cape Epic, or even considering one in the future, Cape Pioneer should be firmly on the calendar.

FIVE DAYS OF PROPER MOUNTAIN BIKING
The 2026 edition introduces a fresh beginning with the race starting in Wilderness for the first time before making its traditional journey inland to finish in Oudtshoorn.
Along the way, riders will experience an ever-changing landscape as the route traverses three distinct biospheres, showcasing some of the Western Cape’s most spectacular riding terrain.

The Cape Pioneer route has always been about authentic mountain biking. Expect a carefully crafted blend of flowing established singletrack wherever possible, mixed with the old-school jeep tracks and gravel climbs that have become part of the event’s character. It’s the variety that keeps every stage engaging and rewards complete mountain bikers rather than XCO specialists.
Behind the event is Dryland Event Management, South Africa’s benchmark for professionally organised endurance events. With decades of experience delivering some of the country’s most respected mountain biking, trail running and gravel races, Dryland has built a reputation for outstanding route design, slick logistics and a rider experience that keeps competitors coming back year after year.

TOUGH BUT ACHIEVEABLE
Don’t mistake “preparation race” for “easy race.” The five stages average 85.8km with approximately 1 790m of climbing each day. Those are numbers that demand respect and proper preparation, yet remain realistic for committed amateur racers who train consistently and have already completed a few multi-day events.
It’s exactly the sort of challenge that builds both confidence and experience for longer stage races.
Perhaps more importantly, five consecutive days teach valuable lessons about pacing, recovery, nutrition and equipment management – skills that become increasingly important as stage races get longer.
“In 2025, 30% of the Cape Pioneer field comprised Master and Veteran Men’s teams, two highly competitive categories in this event. A similar or higher percentage is expected in 2026 as more riders recognise that the late-September Cape Pioneer is the ideal race to train for during winter and set riders up with a good base for the spring and summer racing,” said Carel Herholdt, co-founder of the Cape Pioneer.

A FINISH LIKE NO OTHER
Every great stage race needs a signature moment. For Cape Pioneer, that moment remains the legendary summit finish atop Swartberg Pass.
Still the only mountain-top finish in a South African mountain bike stage race, reaching the top of this iconic climb has become one of the defining achievements in local mountain biking. It’s the sort of finish that riders remember long after the fatigue has faded.
For elite competitors, Cape Pioneer’s UCI status adds another layer of significance, offering valuable UCI ranking points alongside a competitive prize purse and strong media exposure.
For everyone else, it simply means lining up at an event that attracts quality competition and delivers a professionally organised racing experience from start to finish.

TIME TO STEP UP
Every rider remembers their first stage race. They also remember the first time they took on something bigger.
The Momentum Medical Scheme Cape Pioneer, presented by Biogen has found its place as that natural next step – a race that pushes riders beyond their comfort zone without making the leap feel overwhelming. Whether your ambition is to eventually tackle the Cape Epic or simply to experience one of South Africa’s premier multi-day mountain bike races, Cape Pioneer delivers the ideal combination of challenge, adventure and achievement.
Although the focus is primarily on two-rider teams, the Cape Pioneer also accommodates solo entrants. To find out more or to secure your entry, click here. https://capepioneer.co.za
