If you’re looking for a gravel ride with purpose this autumn, mark 16 May 2026 on your calendar. Trap de Val is back and it’s more than just a big day out on the bike. It’s a 162 km gravel adventure that brings the cycling community together to support the incredible work of the Teddy Bear Foundation for Abused Children.
Paid partnership
What started in 2020 as three friends chasing a meaningful ride has grown into a much-loved annual event, with nearly 200 riders lining up in 2025. This year, you can be part of the story.
THE RIDE
The day rolls out from the Cycle Hub in the Lifestyle Centre at Thaba Trails and finishes at the iconic Val Hotel in the quiet village of Val.
Val is considered the smallest town in South Africa, with a permanent population of around 8-10 residents. Located in Mpumalanga, this tiny hamlet has a rich history dating back to 1896 and is known for its annual Boer and Brit Day festival. Despite its small size, Val has a charming atmosphere, with attractions like the Val Hotel, a railway station turned hotel, and a picturesque village green.

Expect a proper gravel day out:
- Distance: 162 km
- Elevation: 1238 m
- Surface: 85% gravel
- Support: Four water points and a halfway food stop
The GPX file will be shared on 6 May, giving you plenty of time to load the route and get ready.
SOLO OR TEAM UP
You’ve got two ways to tackle Trap de Val:
- Solo: Take on the full 162 km yourself.
- Duo Team: Ride it relay-style with a partner, each covering half the distance.
E-bikes are welcome. Just plan your power management or arrange a spare battery at halfway.
A RIDE WITH PURPOSE
All funds raised support the Teddy Bear Foundation for Abused Children, a respected South African NGO that has been helping abused children and their families since 1986.
What began with medical support has grown into a holistic programme providing counselling, forensic services and family support – making a real difference where it’s needed most.
FINISH LINE VIBES
