eBikes are everywhere. They’re not for everyone, but for those who’ve embraced the pedal-assist revolution, they’ve been nothing short of transformative. Still, as the category has matured, a question has lingered: did we really need another full-power eMTB? As it turns out, yes, we did.

With the launch of the Turbo Levo R, Specialized has filled a very real gap in the performance eBike segment. Not with more travel, more weight, or more brute force – but with refinement, agility and purpose.
One of the more curious trends in recent years has been seeing middle-aged or elderly riders – often with limited technical skills – aboard full-power eBikes packing 170mm to 160mm of suspension travel. These are machines built to send big drops, clear gap jumps and charge through rock gardens. Yet many of them spend their lives rolling gravel roads or cruising Green-level singletrack.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with riding there. But there is such a thing as too much bike. That’s exactly where the Levo R comes in.
Specialized cleverly frames the comparison like this: if the Specialized Turbo Levo 4 is a Ford Ranger Raptor, the Levo R is a rally car – lighter, sharper, designed to carry speed and precision rather than simply bulldoze terrain.

The rally connection runs deeper. Late rally superstar Ken Block was a longtime Specialized ambassador, and the Levo R pays subtle tribute to his legacy. His daughter, Lia Block, features in the launch visuals alongside Red Bull shredder Kriss Kyle.
This isn’t a stripped-down Levo. It’s a recalibrated one.
The Levo R remains unapologetically performance-focused. But compared to its Levo 4 sibling, it’s lighter, faster rolling and equipped with shorter travel – making it the smarter choice for riders who want full-power assistance and serious range, without gravity-bike excess.

Here’s how it stacks up.
POWER
The flagship S-Works model delivers 850W peak power and 111Nm of torque, while the other models produce 810W and 105Nm. That’s identical output to the Levo 4 – only now it’s pushing a lighter chassis. Same punch. Sharper delivery.
POWER DELIVERY
Using the Turbo 3.1 system introduced on the Levo 4, the Levo R amplifies rider input with impressive precision. Torque delivery at low cadence is smooth and controlled, preserving traction and balance when gradients steepen. In simple terms, it climbs anything – with composure.
COCKPIT
Braking duties shift from SRAM Maven (Levo 4) to lighter SRAM Motive brakes, offering improved modulation. The S-Works Levo R also features the Roval Control SL RISE integrated carbon bar/stem – typically seen on the Epic 8 analogue race bikes – delivering lighter weight and added compliance compared to the alloy setup on the Levo 4.

RANGE
Battery compatibility mirrors the Levo 4: 800Wh, 600Wh and a 250Wh range extender. But thanks to its lighter weight, full 29-inch wheel setup and faster-rolling tyres, real-world range should improve. While Specialized hasn’t published specific comparative testing figures, logic suggests increased efficiency over distance.
WHEELS
Unlike the mullet configuration of the Levo 4, the Levo R runs full 29-inch wheels for maximum momentum and speed retention. It rolls on Roval Traverse SL II wheels and is fitted with Specialized’s Purgatory GRID tyre up front and GRID Trail at the rear – faster-rolling and lighter than the gravity-focused Butcher GRID Gravity rubber on the Levo 4 They’re grippy. But they’re built for speed.

MOTOR SOUND
The Turbo 3.1 motor system remains one of the quieter full-power eBike drives on the market – smooth and discreet under load.
FRAME
The FACT carbon frame has been purpose-built around a 140mm fork / 130mm shock chassis and retains the “Wattage Cottage” battery hatch and SWAT internal storage system found on the Levo 4. Crucially, it’s 530g lighter.

SUSPENSION
Travel drops from 160/150mm (Levo 4) to 140/130mm on the Levo R – but it shares the same Fox Genie shock platform, tuned specifically for this bike.
The result:
- Linear, coil-like feel in the bump zone
- Progressive ramp-up to prevent harsh bottom-outs
- Simple adjustability
- 17% more travel used in the bump zone compared to a standard Float shock
It’s supple where you need it. Supportive when it counts.

MICRO-TUNE CONTROL
MicroTune allows on-the-fly pedal-assist adjustments in 10% increments. New Dynamic MicroTune automatically unlocks full power during hard accelerations – essentially a built-in Boost mode. There’s also a 0/100 setting that mirrors rider output proportionally. Push 250W, and the motor adds 250W.
CONNECTED INTELLIGENCE
Via the Specialized App, riders can integrate Strava, Garmin and Apple Find My, remotely lock the bike and install system updates.

CHARGING
With the new 12A charger, the battery charges from 0–80% in under 60 minutes in Fast Mode. Less waiting. More riding.
ADJUSTABLE GEOMETRY
Geometry adjustability remains – and while not every rider will use it, the versatility matters.
- Steeper head angle, lower BB, shorter chainstays: for the aggressive shredder
- Slacker, longer setup: for the endurance-focused rider chasing confidence over distance.
WEIGHT
Comparing S-Works models, the Levo R is 2.42kg lighter than the Levo 4. Specialized claims the ultra-light S-Works Levo R (with 600Wh battery) weighs 18.85kg, placing it among the lightest full-power eMTBs available.

Todd Cannatelli, Specialized Mountain Bike Program Manager, described it as “an addition to a maturing category,” adding that the Levo R is built around “SuperNatural Power Delivery, Agility and Range.”
Senior Product Manager Brian Gordon echoed that sentiment: “We wanted to take DNA from Epic 8 EVO and build a fast rally-car type package. The Levo R frame is dedicated to 29 wheels and designed to carry momentum.”

SUMMARY
The Specialized Turbo Levo R isn’t a replacement. It’s a refinement. With 140mm front and 130mm rear travel, full-power output, lighter construction and faster-rolling intent, it delivers endurance, sharper climbing control and smoother power modulation in a package that finally matches how many riders actually ride. Inspired by rally speed and built for momentum, the Levo R fills a genuine gap – both globally and here in South Africa.
