South African mountain biking’s toughest one-day test is turning 20 and what better way to celebrate than by securing your spot on the start line of the 2026 Momentum Medical Scheme Attakwas Extreme, presented by Biogen? If you’ve never taken it on, this is your year. If you have – you already know: finishing the Attakwas Extreme isn’t just another ride. It’s a badge of honour.

On Saturday, 17 January 2026, the rugged wilderness of the Klein Karoo will once again host some of the country’s hardest and most committed mountain bikers – and for the 20th edition, you’ll have one small mercy: an extra hour has been added to the official cut-off time. That’s right, you’ll now have 12 hours to battle the terrain, the heat, the climbs on that infamous 121km route from Chandelier Game Reserve near Oudtshoorn to Pine Creek Resort in Groot Brak River.

But don’t be fooled, this isn’t a “softer” version of the Attakwas. It’s still the same raw, remote, and relentless test that’s been challenging bikes, bodies, and reputations since 2007. From the technical climbs of the Attakwas Kloof to the searing Karoo heat and leg-draining rollers in the final 30km, the race remains a true test of fitness, skill, and mental resolve. That’s why finishing it – even once – earns you serious respect in the South African mountain biking community.

To mark the occasion, the race organisers have teamed up with three-time Attakwas Extreme winner Matthys Beukes, who has developed a comprehensive training plan exclusively for 2026 entrants. Whether you’re aiming for a sub-9-hour finish or just want to beat the cut-off, this is your chance to train like a champion – with insider knowledge from someone who knows exactly what it takes to master this beast of a race. The plan includes structured workouts, key race-prep sessions, and pacing strategies tailored to every ability level.

For many, Attakwas is the perfect way to kick-start the racing year – a test of where your legs and lungs are after the festive season. But it’s also so much more. It’s a personal pilgrimage. A rite of passage. And in its 20th year, it’s shaping up to be one of the most memorable editions yet.
Don’t wait. Entries are limited and they go fast! If you’ve ever dreamed of tackling the Attakwas Extreme, now is the time to commit. With more time on the clock and better resources than ever before, 2026 offers your best shot at conquering the Hell of the South.
