Just as there is a fierce brand battle for market share among full-suspension marathon/XCO bikes, so too is there growing competition in South Africa’s full-power eBike market. And the newest competitor is the second-generation SCOTT Patron eRide.
Paid partnership with SCOTT Sports Africa
Full-power eBikes is the most in-demand bicycle category currently and there’s a growing number of brands delivering impressive bikes and giving South Africans a burgeoning bouquet of choices.
SCOTT’s complete redesign of the Patron eRide has pushed SCOTT into a leading position with a bike that’s technologically superior, delivers impressive power, offers generous range and handles like a trail bike.
Technology moves fast and eBike technology is constantly evolving. The SCOTT Sports engineers have made sure that the new Patron eRide incorporates the best of current eBike technology as well as SCOTT’s own patented technologies.
The new SCOTT Patron eRide’s frame is sleeker than its predecessor and it now incorporates the same internal rear shock design as the SCOTT Spark at the base of the seattube. The vertical shock orientation delivers 150mm of rear travel that combines, via SCOTT’s patented TracLoc remote adjust system, with 150mm-170mm of suspension fork travel to deliver optimal control and comfort on all South African trails. The new frame now also has an adjustable headtube angle for those who like to fine-tune the bike’s geometry.
The motor is the new Bosch Performance Line Gen 5, which is super quiet and delivers a generous 600 Watts of peak power and 85Nm of torque. The Bosch PowerTube 800-Wh battery sits neatly in the downtube with ample range. A separate 250 Wh Bosch PowerMore range extender battery that fits into the bottle cage can deliver additional range.
The motor is paired with an ergonomically kind, wireless remote mode adjuster on the left handlebar, which allows you to switch between the four support modes. In addition, there is a Bosch System Controller on the top tube, which uses coloured LEDs to display both the battery charge status and the current power-assist mode.
There are two series of the Patron, the 900 and the ST (Super Trail).
The Patron 900 is crafted for all-around fun and versatility, making it the ideal choice for trail enthusiasts who want a bike that can handle a variety of conditions. With 150mm of well-balanced front and rear travel and versatile, trail-optimised components, the Patron 900 is perfect for riders looking for a bike that performs reliably on both climbs and descents, without compromising comfort or control.
The Patron ST is purpose-built for aggressive, technical riding on rough and demanding trails, with reinforced components designed to withstand bigger impacts and intense downhill action. With 170mm of front travel and a piggyback shock in the rear, the ST platform excels when the trail points downhill, offering maximum control and stability for riders who seek adrenaline-fuelled descents.
“Mountain bikers are more time constrained these days and eBikes are allowing them to continue doing what they love. Also, more families are getting into mountain biking and eBikes help enable family members to join each other on rides. While easily meeting these and other needs, the Patron eRide range also features all of SCOTT’s market-leading technology. The new Patron eRide range both confirms SCOTT’s principles of Innovation, Technology and Design and elevates it to the leader in the full-power eBike segment.” said Joggie Prinsloo, SCOTT Sports Africa Brand Manager.
That patented SCOTT technology on the new Patron includes:
Integrated Suspension Technology: Enhances performance by lowering the bike’s centre of gravity. This design improvement results in superior handling and a more stable, confidence-inspiring ride. Furthermore, the shock is well-protected from the elements, preserving its performance. As a bonus, these thoughtful design elements contribute to a visually striking and impressive bike.
Trac-Loc Suspension System: a proprietary SCOTT design that connects the shock to a handlebar remote, allowing you to switch between three modes for versatile performance. These adjustments alter the bike’s dynamic geometry: you sit higher in the shock’s travel, which increases ground clearance and positions you more effectively for power transfer on snappy singletrack and technical climbs.
Low-friction Cable Management: For both hydraulic and mechanical housings, SCOTT has designed the most natural routing for them to enter and exit the frame. The goal is to reduce friction by avoiding unnecessary bends and to ensure optimal functionality
Riding Feedback: To ensure you’re always in control, the Patron features Bosch displays and remotes that simplify mode changes and keep track of your ride without distracting from the trail. The minimalist design allows for seamless integration with the bike and includes Kiox 300 that displays Speed, Distance and Navigation and Intuvia 100 that displays Speed, Distance Riding Mode and Battery Level.
Bosch ABS Pro: Selected Patron models come equipped with Bosch ABS Pro, a braking system designed to improve traction on challenging surfaces. This advanced system automatically adjusts brake pressure based on current conditions, allowing you to maintain focus on the trail ahead.
Syncros Finishing Kit: The Patron features a Hixon Cockpit from Syncros in either one-piece carbon integrated cockpit, or a more traditional two-piece bar and stem. Multiple options exist for computer mounts, lights, etc. Swapping head angle is easy. Just take off your cockpit, remove headset cups, rotate them each 180 degrees, and reassemble. All cables flow neatly under the bar and into the headset leading to a clean, clutter free cockpit.
