There are stage races… and then there are stage races that make you slow down, look up, and realise where you are. The 2026 Glacier Waterberg Traverse, taking place from 1–3 May at Summerplace Game Reserve, is firmly in the second category.
Paid partnership with Dryland Event Management
Possibly the only mountain bike stage race run entirely inside a private game reserve, the Glacier Waterberg Traverse delivers a riding experience that’s as wild as it is refined. Think flowing singletrack carved through pristine bushveld, the quiet tension of riding in big-game country, and trails that feel purpose-built rather than beaten into submission.

RIDE OR RACE
The event offers two distinct options:
- The Ride is shorter, more relaxed, and perfectly suited to eBikes and social mountain bikers. The focus here is on immersion: appreciating the Waterberg’s vegetation, terrain and wildlife while riding beautifully designed routes that prioritise flow and enjoyment over suffering.
- The Race is where things get spicier. Distances may look friendly on paper – with no stage longer than 60km – but don’t be fooled. A high volume of handmade singletrack, plenty of climbing, and technical descents demand solid bike-handling skills and a decent engine. That said, the compact distances make this an ideal stage race for Under-23 riders and anyone looking for a high-quality, manageable multi-day challenge.

WILDLIFE APLENTY
Summerplace Game Reserve is home to more than 40 species of large mammals, and wildlife encounters are not a novelty here – they’re part of the daily ride briefing. Giraffe, zebra, kudu, sable and roan antelope are regular sightings, and yes, leopard roam the reserve too. It’s mountain biking with an edge of adrenaline that has nothing to do with heart rate zones.

CLOSE ENOUGH TO ESCAPE, FAR ENOUGH TO FORGET
Situated in the Waterberg Biosphere, Summerplace is just over two hours from Pretoria and under three hours from Johannesburg. Close enough for an easy getaway, far enough to properly disconnect from city noise, screens and schedules.

STAY WELL, EAT BETTER
Accommodation ranges from luxury lodges to stylish glamping tents, ensuring comfort regardless of how rugged your riding style is. Entries include all meals from Thursday dinner through to Sunday lunch – a total of nine meals. If you’ve ridden a Dryland Events race before, you already know the deal: generous portions, nutritious menus, and catering that consistently punches above its weight.

SOLO FOCUS, TEAM OPTIONS
While the Glacier Waterberg Traverse is designed primarily for solo riders, team entries are available for those who want to share the journey. Non-riding supporters are also welcome, with dedicated packages that let them soak up the reserve without turning a pedal.
If your idea of a stage race includes world-class trails, real wilderness, exceptional organisation and a setting that’s impossible to fake, the 2026 Glacier Waterberg Traverse should already be on your calendar.
