Hundreds of road cyclists, mountain bikers and triathletes train at Cadence Cycling studios around South Africa every week. They each do two one-hour sessions per week and reap rapid, often significant improvements in their racing performances. For those that haven’t yet converted, here are six good reasons to train at Cadence Cycling…

1 It’s all about oxygen management

Speed, endurance, climbing ability – more power! The key is oxygen and how to deliver more of it from the air in the lungs to the legs, and then how to use the delivered oxygen to produce power – there’s some science involved here. The bigger this capacity, the faster you go!

2 We break it down

Cadence Cycling looks at the leg muscles, respiratory muscles, heart and lungs to be independently trainable systems. It’s this physiology that guides training, so session design is all in house.

“We don’t redistribute other people’s plans and can answer for the functional thought process for every interval,” says Cadence Cycling founder and director, Mark Carroll.

“This focus on independently trainable systems has evolved into a unique approach to training. Sessions are challenging but fair, and results from personal bests to podiums come through every week. Our improved knowledge translates to better training, and we are doing things better than ever. There’s still a lot to learn which means there’s even more to come in the future,” says Carroll

3 We keep it fun

All Cadence Cycling sessions are designed to keep members developing toward their goals, while keeping fitness fun.

“We’re all about boosting individual performance and keeping you motivated in a fun group environment. Whether you’re into cycling for leisure or for podiums, we cater for all ages and abilities,” says Carroll.

4 It’s tailored to you

The biggest percentage of cyclists who train at Cadence Cycling are those for whom time is a premium but their innate competitive streak still means they would like to attack the hills a little faster, endure longer, maybe dish out the pace for a change. The programs are a real challenge, but you will not be asked to do more than you are physically capable of because your training will be tailored to your current ability and adjusted as you progress. It doesn’t matter whether you are a road cyclist or mountain biker, complete beginner or have been riding and racing for several years.

5 State-of-the-art bikes

The bike is nothing more than metal and moving parts, it’s how you train on it that matters. Nevertheless, we insist on a smooth and accurate ride and that’s why we’ve invested in CycleOps bikes from the USA, fitted with PowerTap power meters and Garmin heart rate monitors. Our bikes use the same highly engineered design as PowerTap bicyle power meters.

6 It’s safe

Unfortunately, training on your own in South Africa is dangerous. Secure indoor training is becoming more essential for those that are committed to improving their cycling. Cadence Cycling offers that safety and each studios has showers to ensure before-and-after-work training convenience.

“The great thing is that you still get to train with others, but each at your own level or pace. Nobody gets ‘dropped from the bunch’. Everyone gets to focus on training and not have to worry about their safety,” says Carroll.

THE MOST EFFECTIVE, SAFE WAY TO TRAIN

In summary, Cadence Cycling is structured indoor power-training that uses the most sophisticated technology in a simplified format that’s easy to follow. Cadence Cycling uses it’s own High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) plans, which are proven to improve power, stamina and pedalling efficiency in just 2×1-hour sessions a week. There are eight branches, based in or near Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
